A Mayan Star: Official Book of 100 Book Day 2011!

11 Oct

"A Mayan Star Born to Shine" follows Christina on her path towards education and empowerment.

We are so pleased to announce that our Official Book of 2011 is A Mayan Star Born to Shine, a new children’s book written by Amaris Espinosa and inspired by the writings of indigenous Guatemalan girls in the Starfish One By One Program. “Mayan Star” tells the story of Christina, a rural Mayan girl in Guatemala and her struggles to get an education. The whimsical imagery takes the reader on an adventure as Christina meets her jaguar spirit guide and learns about her inner strength.

Only 1 in 20 Mayan girls in rural Guatemala completes elementary school. Most come from large, poor families that cannot afford school fees or the absence of a daughter from the fields and home. In Mayan homes, girls do most of the chores – they take care of their younger siblings, cook wash laundry, in addition to growing crops. Too often, these factors prevent girls from getting the education that can improve their lives.

A Mayan Star Born To Shine certainly represents the girls who are Reading Promoters in Reading Village’s Readers and Leaders Program. We are thrilled to promote this book, and the awareness that it brings, as part of 100 Book Day.

Each 100 Book Day Reading Pair will receive a copy of “A Mayan Star”! To become a Reading Pair, click here!

“I am a Reader!”

3 Oct

Carden, "the other Reader," hangs around during 100 Book Day 2010!

During 100 Book Day 2010, Finn and I, along with Reading Pairs Colleen and Carden, and Carrie and Alex, headed to Louisville’s Memory Square Park to read a bag of 10 books. After a reading session that included “Is Your Buffalo Ready For Kindergarten” while hanging upside-down from the monkey bars, the three boys initiated a lively game of Hide n’ Seek.

Carden and Alex, both kindergartners at the time, had met each other for the first time earlier in the morning during their third bag of books at Lamar’s Donuts, and had continued to read together during our 100 Book Day Story Hour at Louisville Public Library. While they dodged around the park, I relaxed on a bench with the other mamas. After a few moments, Alex came charging towards us looking for some assistance in finding Carden (who was hidden nearby in a stand of pine trees). “Mom!” he yelled, “I’m trying to find the other Reader!” I so loved that, in Alex’s eyes, Carden was identified – above all else that he could have been: “the other boy,” “Finn’s friend,” “the kid I’m playing with,” “the hider”- as the Reader.

A few days after 100 Book Day 2010, I learned that another Reading Buddy, Cassidy (also in kindergarten at the time), who had previously been hesitant about reading, had for the first time initiated reading a book to her mom. Through accomplishing the great act of reading a hundred books in one day, Cassidy had discovered the inner-confidence she needed to read aloud.

I knew that – through our support of Reading Village and their sustainable literacy promotion programs – we were benefiting the children of Guatemala to become readers. It wasn’t until Alex’s proclamation and Cassidy’s initiation that I recognized one of the great benefits to the children that participate in 100 Book Day as a buddy in a Reading Pairs. Through these precious moments, I realized that 100 Book Day was more than spending an incredible day with our kids, more than raising funds and awareness for Reading Village. It was also about empowering our children to read, and to find joy in reading. I recognized that 100 Book Day is a vehicle for children to identify as Readers, to be able to vocalize, “I am a Reader!

My hope is that hundreds, even thousands, of children worldwide will one day participate in 100 Book Day, and by doing so, will begin their lifelong journey with reading.

Please join us by becoming a Reading Pair, supporting Reading Village with a donation, and by enjoying reading with someone smaller in your life!
